Serrano Chapter's activities are many and varied. In addition to the national projects which are supported through the National Society, contributions are made to local projects such as the literacy program of the local library, holiday baskets for the needy, and a campership for a child. Serrano also participates in the annual Glendora Christmas Parade. Each year Serrano sponsors the American History Essay Contest in grades five through eight and the Christopher Columbus Essay contest in the high school. The winners of these are given monetary awards as well as a medal and certificate. DAR Good Citizens are chosen at each local high school and they are given monetary awards and medals also. Both these groups are honored with a tea to which they, their parents, and their teachers are invited. Serrano Chapter presents an award to the outstanding cadet in each of the ROTC programs at the local high schools which have the program. These cadets are presented with their awards at a luncheon and at their Change of Command Ceremonies. FLAG RETIREMENT In conjunction with Boy Scout Troop # 493, Serrano Chapter holds a flag retirement ceremony each year on the Saturday closest to Flag Day. Each flag is ceremoniously presented to the audience and then burned carefully. About one hundred old or worn flags handed in by chapter members and the residents of community are retired. To finance all of its projects, Serrano holds many different fund raisers. A rummage sale takes place just once a year, but preparation for it goes on all year. Sale of Innisbrook gifts and wrap and Helen Grace candies are inci-dental fund raisers, but most of the activities are social events as well as fund raisers. A Garden Party and Fashion Show, a Progressive Dinner, a HODAR (Husbands of DAR) Barbeque, and a Christmas pot luck are both social and money making events. Historic Fairmount Cemetery 2007 Each year Serrano participates in the Memorial Day ceremonies at both Oakdale Memorial Park and the historic Fairmount Cemetery. At each, a wreath is placed in memory of Revolutionary War Veterans. Fairmount is the oldest cemetery in the area. A Revolutionary War granddaughter is buried there.
